The main focus of the game is a 4 player online cooperative shooter that takes place in one of six different scenarios ranging from a bank, to a prison, to a corporate building. Players will be able to complete each mission in many different ways. You can choose to play as either an assault, sharpshooter, or support class. Replayability will come from leveling up the 3 different classes in their own progression trees and trying to perfect each level. The police will come in waves and the AI will adapt depending on how you perform, similar to the zombies in Left 4 Dead.

The skill trees allow different abilities such as healing, giving ammunition and handcuffing hostages. Respawns are determined by the number of hostages you are willing to trade, and as you level up more weapons and abilities are earned. The game runs on the Diesel Engine.

Dark Sector, the gameplay revolves around the use of the glaive. The glaive is a three-pronged boomerang-esque weapon which returns to Hayden after every throw. The glaive can be used for long-distance dismemberment, solving environmental puzzles, and picking up various items. When up close to an enemy, context-sensitive actions may appear, allowing the player to execute enemies with "finishers". Environmental puzzles in the game usually focus upon capturing various elements (fire, electricity, and ice) with the glaive. For example, a web that is blocking your path can be bypassed by capturing fire with the glaive and then launching it at the web to burn it down. The glaive is dual-wielded with a gun in Hayden's left hand. This allows for combos like stunning a shielded enemy at long-distance with the glaive and then shooting him while unprotected. As the game progresses, the glaive is given several new abilities; it can be guided through the air, being able to kill multiple enemies (This feature is controlled via the Sixaxis on the PlayStation 3 and by the right analog stick on the Xbox 360); a charged up throw for deadlier attacks, and is able to make the user invisible for a short period of time and also provide a temporary shield.

Wanted is a third person shooter in the vein of Gears of War or Dark Sector, as it relies heavily on cover. Like said games, you can navigate from behind cover with the flick of the left stick and the push of a face button, however Wanted attempts to stand out by putting players under constant pressure.

That is to say, it is far more effective to constantly shift to a different source of cover then it is to stay static. The enemy A.I is designed in such a way that it will continually try to flush the player out of cover, and if you don't move, you may find a grenade lodged in your backside. Another bonus to jumping around to multiple cover is that it keeps your adrenaline high.

Adrenaline in this game is shown on screen with a meter, and when it fills up, Wesley or Cross will be able to pull off special moves such as Assassin Time, which slows down time and allows you to get optimal head shots, as well as bullet curving and so-called "Shrapnel Storms".
